Lilac Flower,

Syringa.
.

Varieties:

Syringa vuigaris, single and double varieties.
.

Colors:

Shades of lavender, purple, rosy pink, and white.
.

Scent:

Strong, sweet fragrance.
.

Most of the flowers are open, or beginning to open. If flowers are cut too early, and are mostly budded, they probably will not open.
.

Approximately 3 to 5 days, sometimes less.

Lilac flowers bloom only in the spring, but an imported French hybrid variety is available from florists starting in late December through the winter. This variety is not very fragrant.
.

Cost:

Winter — expensive.
Spring — moderately priced.
.

Meaning:

Lilacs symbolize first love.
.

Arranging Tip:

Lilacs mixed into spring bouquets have exquisite scent and color, but unfortunately these flowers last longer when used alone.
.

Growing Tip:

Properly pruning lilac shrubs will produce more flowers for the next year. Trim all lilac flowers after they have faded, just below the end of the flower spring. Also, trim away some of the older branches that bend close to the ground. This will ensure plenty of blossoms for the next year. Do not prune your lilac after the Fourth of July. At this point, lilacs are beginning their new growth, and pruning may inhibit next season's show of blossoms.
